We all know that cities are hotspots for sustainability challenges – as well as solutions. Yet existing framework programs that are meant to support new actions at the urban level tend to be very risk-averse. But what if there was a funding mechanism that encouraged cities to take bold steps and try out completely new ideas to solve our complex and evolving urban challenges? Well, that’s what the new EU program, Urban Innovative Actions (UIA), was set up to do.
BEE was tasked by the UIA to develop their first promotional video. Being a new program, that is very unique in the EU funding landscape, they wanted something different and outstanding. It was the perfect challenge for BEE to take up.
Building on the concept of the UIA as an ‘urban lab’, we developed the creative frame of a board game that visualizes how new ideas can be tested within real urban settings. We went beyond just developing a surface: we created a real board game with cards, dice, action figures, and all of this was packaged into an uplifting and inspirational video complemented with animation.
We hope you enjoy watching this video, as much as we enjoyed making it : )
